Security Assessments

A framework tells you what's missing. We tell you what to do about it.

A clear-eyed look at your program against the standards that matter, with a roadmap you can actually act on.

CREST-accredited. Built around your scope.
Identify Gaps Before They Become Problems

Security assessments provide a cooperative evaluation of your organization’s security posture through expert analysis of controls, policies, and technical implementations. Unlike adversarial testing, we work alongside your team to understand what’s in place and how well it works.

Our CREST-certified consultants evaluate your security architecture, review existing controls against industry frameworks, and identify gaps that could leave you exposed during audits or real-world attacks. This collaborative approach reveals your current strengths and potential weaknesses in your current security program.

Whether you’re preparing for compliance certification, validating new architecture before deployment, or simply need an objective evaluation of your security maturity, our assessments give you a clear picture of where you stand and what needs improvement.

We offer a variety of advisory services tailored to your organization’s needs. Our three most popular offerings are:

  1. Foundational Gap Analysis
  2. Architecture Reviews
  3. Cloud Configuation Reviews

Foundational Gap Analysis

A gap analysis is a process of looking at an organization’s current state, comparing that against the desired future state, and identifying the specific goals and steps needed to close any gaps between the two. Performing a foundational gap analysis allows an organization to obtain a more thorough understanding of the environment’s current state, and the gaps that must be addressed to reach your desired future state.

Unlike penetration testing, which tends to be adversarial and invasive, a gap analysis is a cooperative exercise in which Secure Ideas works with clients to review each component of the environment, evaluating the architectural design and controls that encompass the overall security posture.

A gap analysis is an exercise that can benefit an organization of any size that is looking for ways to improve their security posture. The gap analysis could be for an initial assessment, investigating employee turnover, or addressing worries that a security breach is imminent. Whatever the motivation, a gap analysis will help identify weaknesses and vulnerabilities, and allow your organization to identify ways to address these concerns, and more effectively manage your security program.

Comprehensive Framework Analysis

Through scheduled interviews with relevant personnel, we thoroughly review your currently deployed IT system against a specified control framework or benchmark, evaluating architectural design and controls. We are familiar with many frameworks, but most commonly assess organizations against the following:
NIST 800-53
NIST 800-53
The US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) frameworks are a set of security and privacy controls designed to help organizations protect their information systems. We evaluate how well your existing controls align with NIST 800-53 requirements.
NIST SP 800-171
NIST SP 800-171
A more stringent set of NIST security controls specifically designed to protect sensitive unclassified information handled by non-federal organizations. We assess alignment with these focused requirements.
NIST
NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF)
Industry-standard guidelines and best practices for managing cybersecurity risks, set by NIST. We evaluate how well your security program aligns with this common framework.
CIS
CIS Critical Security Controls
Consensus-based cybersecurity controls from global experts at the Center for Internet Security (CIS). We assess how your existing controls align with these prioritized defensive actions.
CMMC Level 1 Pre-Assessment
CMMC Level 1 Pre-Assessment
Department of Defense cybersecurity framework for contractors. We evaluate your controls against Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Level 1 requirements, preparing you for official assessment.

Architecture Reviews

An organization’s Information Technology architecture is a complex, bespoke set of components and technologies, which have shifted and developed over time as needs change and new systems and services have been added to the stack. As the tech stack has evolved, vulnerabilities or security gaps can form that security testing may struggle to identify.

We recommend performing an architecture review to ensure that your organization has a clear picture of any security weaknesses or vulnerabilities that arise from the way the IT architecture has been designed Unlike penetration testing, this is a cooperative process where we work with your team to review each component and evaluate your organization’s security posture.

Architecture reviews can focus on single implementations, like an in-house developed application, or overarching topics like ransomware preparedness. This methodology identifies issues that may not be evident during penetration testing, whether process-related or technology-based.

Through discussions and reviews of existing documentation, we cover a wide-ranging variety of topics, and compare your architecture to best practices for secure design. Each interview consists of at least one Secure Ideas staff member interviewing the appropriate group for 60-90 minutes via phone or in person.

Common themes include:

Architecture Review
Identity and Access Management Knowing which identities should access and interact with a solution is key. We ensure appropriate permission policies grant the right level of access in a secure manner, covering both users and privileged access.
Network Access By limiting direct network access to specific services, systems, and applications, organizations greatly reduce potential attack vectors. We review what your solution exposes, what prevents unintended connectivity, and what detects strange network behavior.
Configuration Management Solutions need expected baseline configurations with validation processes. We determine how you detect configuration drift, respond to vulnerabilities, and track changes to keep the baseline secure.
Resilience and Recovery What happens when something goes wrong? We review preparation for data loss or system outages, from backup processes to disaster recovery plans and testing protocols, vital for responding to outages, disasters, and ransomware
Security Auditing and Alerting Essential for staying aware of system activity. We review what events you track, how you track them, how you generate alerts on abnormalities, and your ability to detect changes and respond to malicious activity.
practically secure

An evaluation of your security program against the PCI Data Security Standard, covering PCI security assessments, self-assessment support, and advising on scope, applicability, and controls. You get direct access to a Qualified Security Assessor who speaks plainly and knows the standard inside and out.

Cloud Configuration Reviews

With many organizations today using infrastructure and operations that reside in the cloud, ensuring your cloud-based environment is well-configured and secure is more important than ever.

We collaborate with your team to review your current cloud instance configurations, and assess them for potential security weaknesses and vulnerabilities. Using automated tools combined with manual expert analysis, we evaluate and prioritize findings aligned with current industry standards, then provide analysis and recommendations to improve your cloud security posture.

We analyze technical architecture by reviewing documentation and conducting interviews focused on understanding your design and the reasons for various design decisions. Each interview consists of one Secure Ideas staff member interviewing relevant personnel for 60-90 minutes.

Topics commonly include:

Cloud Configuration Review
Identity and Access Management

Unlike traditional networks, cloud system identities are always exposed to the Internet. We ensure that they’re well protected, and are following the Principle of Least Privilege and cloud-native best practices to maintain data security.

Encryption and Key Management

With the increasing importance of data sovereignty, encryption and key management policies and procedures are critical for compliance and access control. We review your approach to ensure comprehensive encryption and key rotation without compromising security.

Security Governance and Enforcement

Adequate policies and enforcement are essential, whether your data is kept on-premise or cloud-based. We assess risk management, security baselines, and enforcement technologies to ensure data meets security standards throughout its lifecycle.

Secrets Management

Cloud secrets are often short-lived and dynamic. We review secrets storage and management, ensuring complexity guidelines, Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), and appropriate lifecycle management to reduce breach risk from compromised credentials.

Security Information and Event Management

SIEM tools offer ongoing activity audits, allowing organizations to monitor system integrity and behavior. We uncover weaknesses in detecting anomalous activities and help implement comprehensive event logging for faster incident resolution.

Firewall Configuration and Policies

Cloud solutions offer extremely granular, out-of-the-box policies. We ensure that your cloud instance is leveraging modern firewall best practices effectively, including identity-based policies that allow precise resource access control.

Secure Configuration Management

We highlight automation opportunities for a robust, secure cloud environment. Tools like AWS Config and Defender for Cloud constantly evaluate configurations against baselines, and we review how you leverage these capabilities.
